Wet suits are designed to insulate a scuba diver’s body while diving in colder water. Before selecting a wet suit, there are several factors to consider. What is the purpose of the suit? There are many types of wetsuits. For optimal diving, it is very important to find one that is designed for the type of water and water temperatures you’ll be facing. We are the only online scuba diving store that carries plus size wetsuits for the big and tall with sizes up to 6x and with our exchange policy, you never have to worry about a wetsuit not fitting correctly.

Choosing the Thickness of Your Wetsuit

At Tommy D Sports, we have wet suits to meet all of our customers needs, including different thicknesses ranging from 1mm to 7mm to make sure you’re prepared for all temperatures. If you’re kayaking in Florida, you might only need a 1mm wet suit, but if you’re white water rafting or cave diving off the coast of Maine, you would probably go with something thicker, maybe a 5mm suit. The climate and water temperature will determine which is best for you. When you make your selection, please don’t underestimate the water temperatures if you’re diving in a cold climate. Things are very different under water, not like they are above ground at all. When you get cold down there, there’s no warming up unless you surface, so choose carefully.

We strongly suggest that you look closely at the air temperature, water temperature, and length of time under water and the exact use for the wet suit before purchasing. Diving in the environments you need to go into to find gold and precious metals can be dangerous, so finding the right equipment is critical. You’ll want to pay particular attention to the diving gloves and boots you buy. They could save you from serious cuts and abrasions when diving in rocky terrain. They are also a good investment because they’ll allow you to go deeper and reach into places you might not be able to otherwise. That could lead to more valuable finds.

If you are kayaking in a climate like Florida we suggest only a 1mm wet suit, if you are using the wetsuit in a climate like the mid west during the winter we would suggest a 7mm suit with a front zipper to allow air adjustment entry while in the kayak as the 7mm and 5mm suits are very warm and only being warn just in case of an unexpected fall into the cold waters. We also suggest our standard 5mm dive boots for protection of your feet. Following these steps can save your life and allow you to enjoy your sport year round wearing Tommydsports Dive Gear. While Scuba Diving you will need to look mainly at the water temperature, the colder the water the higher thickness or MM you will need for your wetsuit. If you are in 45 degree water we would suggest a 7MM wet suit, if you are in 60 degree water we suggest a 5MM wet suit. While surfing we suggest you use a suit that is one level down from what you would use while Scuba Diving. Foe example, we sell many Surf Suits and Dive Boots to surfers in California. These customers would use a 7mm Wetsuit if they were Scuba Diving but while Surfing we suggest a 5MM Wet Suit or even a 3 MM Wet Suit in the summer months as this allows more mobility and easy flexible movement while on the surf board. The 7MM wetsuits are much stiffer and restricts the movement needed while surfing. Warm Water Scuba Diving such as Florida summer months or Caribbean Scuba Diving may only require a 1MM or a 3MM wetsuit. Many people only use a 1mm suit in waters over 78 degrees as they are looking for protection only while other that are Scuba Diving use a 3MM wet suit as they feel the cold easier then others. A Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) is one of the most important pieces of scuba equipment you will own. A good BCD allows a scuba diver to float comfortably on the waters surface in a face-up position and facilitates precise, easy changes in your underwater body position. A good BCD will also conform securely to the diver's body to minimize underwater drag and swimming effort. At TommyDSports, we provide a selection of buoyancy control devices to meet the needs of every scuba diver. Our BCD's will provide a comfortable, nonrestrictive fit around the shoulders and waist to enhance your scuba diving experience.

Remember to always allow room for your Wet Suit under your BCD, many Scuba Divers wear a 7mm Wet Suit that adds sometimes adds the need for as much as a half size larger BCD. Example, If your BCD is a relaxed fit in a size XL without wearing a wetsuit then you will more then likely be ok with size XL using a 7MM wet suit under the BCD. Now, if a person is wearing a very tight size XL BCD without a wetsuit on then that person may want the size 2X BCD to allow for that 7MM wetsuit to be worn under the BCD.


Each piece of scuba equipment performs a vital job and your diving mask should be no exception. If you choose a low quality diving mask, you will more than likely get one that is made of plastic which can crack and break easily. Higher quality masks are made of rubber or silicone. This type of diving mask is designed to form to the contours of your face and will prevent leaking during your scuba diving experience. At TommyDSports, we have a selection of diving masks made of silicon and rubber to meet the needs of all of our customers. We also have full face hoods that are a terrific way to keep you warm while scuba diving. Our Diving Hoods are a thick warm 5MM Hood with protection in cold waters. We also offer Lycra Hoods available in Camio, Black and blue color. Many Scuba Divers wear these hoods on their hear to make the neoprene hood slide on and off mush easier.
